Dressing Downton Abbey

March 8, 2014

Thank you to Spadina House for inviting me to the media launch for Dressing Downton Abbey! For Downton Abbey fans this is a must see exhibition! If you have not visited Spidina House you’re in for a treat. The house is stunning and an incredible part of Toronto’s history. Many of the original furnishings are in the home and the tour guides have a vast knowledge about its contents. Of course the exhibition is magical for a costume nerd like myself! You can get right up close to the actual gowns, hats and shoes worn by the cast! The hats are of course my favorite part! It was a treat to see the keys dangling of the mannequin wearing Mrs. Hughes day dress! The city has also put on display clothing from real Torontonians including (my favorite) a lace wedding gown worn in 1923. The best part is the bride who wore the dress will be visiting the exhibition next week! I also had the pleasure of meeting Sarah Pepall – the Grand Daughter of the original owner of Spadina House (Mrs. Austin). The stories Ms. Pepall shared of her time in Spidina House where charming. I couldn’t help but ask if she had a favorite hiding spot in the house as child — of course she did and the story was delightful. Finally next week when the exhibition opens be sure to check out one of my hats on display in Spidina House!
